Remote Health Care Clinical Research and Journal

The Journal of the Institute for Remote Health Care exists as a means by which information can be published and ideas exchanged among the International Remote Health Care Community. Provided as a benefit to IRHC Members, Affiliates, Associates and Corporate Members, it seeks to broaden understanding of the specialty of Remote Medicine and to promote the interests of all the practitioners and others involved in supporting remote health care provision. The Journal provides a platform for publication of material that will contribute to the quality development of remote health care. The Journal is edited in the UK – but is focussed on issues relevant to wherever there is remote health care provision – all ‘corners’ of the globe. It is web hosted.

IRHC Journal (The First Edition)

IRHC JournalWelcome to this, the first edition. This Journal marks a significant step forward in the development of the IRHC, improving the opportunity for communication of emerging information and understanding about the specialty. Different to the IRHC Newsletter, it is hoped that the Journal, initially to be published every six months, will provide a progressive platform for the publication of editorial information, leading articles and original papers. This will be supplemented by sections for less structured information exchange and reviews of books and potentially equipment. There is ample scope for advertising throughout.

This edition focuses heavily on emerging activity within the IRHC looking at the current and future status of the rig medic and remote healthcare practitioner. Several years now in existence as a recognised entity, there are still gaps in terms of remote practitioner accreditation and re-accreditation. There is a need to develop systems whereby there is assured maintenance of professional standards. There is as yet no system in any arena – UK or international – that has solved this challenge.

Prof Nelson Norman opens the debate in his leading article. Dr Mark Cheesman and Mr Harry Horsley continue the debate with two thoughtful original papers. It is hoped that these publications start a debate not only within IRHC, but in all environments where such matters may be considered important

Please do consider contacting the editor (Dr Malcolm J Valentine) with anything that you may consider worthy of dissemination. Advice will always be willingly given on achieving publication.

The next edition is intended to be published December 2010.

The IRHC is part of a clinical research project in the UKCS Oil and Gas Industry. Find out more about the project by subscribing to the IRHC Newsletter.
