The Institute of Remote Health Care is an independent academic organisation devoted to the improvement of healthcare for those who live and work in remote and isolated places. The main focus of the IRHC is to promote the recognition of the distinct challenges of remote health care practice; Membership is open to a wide variety of professional groups.
The Institute was founded in 2008 and is constituted by an Executive and a Council. The executive provide direction, manage and administer the IRHC. The IRHC Council consists of 12 members (including international representatives) who represent the interests of all grades of IRHC members.
It is a central aim of the IRHC to promote standards in remote health care and to provide a professional home to meet the needs of Remote HealthCare Practitioner, Offshore Medics on the UKCS, and all clinicians working in remote environments. It also aims to advance standards of education and training for remote health care practitioners and encourage the regulation of remote health care practitioners through the establishment of a voluntary register.

There are recognised gaps and clear opportunities for improvement in the delivery of professional remote health care as practiced in offshore, on vessels, in remote communities and worksites and in expeditions. The IRHC exists to close gaps, identify opportunities and provide the support and direction to realise improvements.

The IRHC values, methods and approaches
The IRHC will deliver its goals by:
• Create and leverage relationships and routes to professional development from professional bodies such as the Royal Colleges of Scotland and England and international universities
• Seek and incorporate the views of medics, doctors, nurses, paramedics, healthcare / occupational healthcare providers, industry, training providers, professional organisation and incorporate these into its activities
• Encourage corporate and individual membership and input
• Provide a modular structure for professional role development for Remote Health Care Practitioners
• Work with academic institutes to create a route to professional qualifications
• Continuously review and improve best practice in remote health care
• Provide academic direction and support for research

IRHC offers a membership grade for everyone who is working in, or has an interest in, the “Remote Health Care/Medicine” sector and industry worldwide. We offer different membership levels depending on the qualifications and the experience of the candidate. |
Current aims of the IRHC education and tele-educational delivery include, Offshore and Rig Medic international training, Pre Hospital clinical training, Provision of continuous medical education directly to the clinic of the health professional working in remote and extreme environments. |
IRHC members have access to many benefits including an IRHC Journal, clinical research papers, IRHC Seminars and Conferences, IRHC Remote HealthCare publications, and clinical professional development support. IRHC members have secure, individual access through the IRHC website. |
